Below are some examples of pommels we have created in the past. If you are interested in something similar or have a different design in mind, check the Ordering page for information on contacting us for a commission.
Our pommels come with your choice of a starter hole for you to drill out and fit, a fully opened tang slot, or a threaded hole for screw-on pommels. For a properly fitted tang slot we will need the tang dimensions.
Disk or wheel pommels were by far the most common style of pommel throughout the medieval period. Ewart Oakeshott specified five types in his typology of medieval swords, types G-K, and types I and J also each have a sub-variant.
This type of pommel was popular from the mid-14th century through the 16th century. Ewart Oakeshott, when creating his typology, called these "scent stoppers" for their similarity to glass bottle stoppers of the medieval period, often used for perfumes, and categorized them as thee Type T, with five variants.
Nicknamed for their similarity to the tails of fish, Oakeshott dubbed these the Type V pommel with three variants. They appear to have been popular only in the 15th century.
Here are examples of other pommel types we have made. If they fall within Oakeshott's typology, the type is given.
Below are some examples of guards we have created in the past. If you are interested in something similar or have a different design in mind, check the Ordering page for information on contacting us for a commission.
Our guards come with a slot for the tang included and a slot for the blade shoulders if desired. We will need either the blade itself or the tang and shoulder dimensions to ensure proper sizing for the slots.
In addition to fully finished hilt pieces, we also have blanks available for those looking to do the work themselves. It doesn't always pay to purchase the raw material for a single project, since many vendors require minimum orders or don't stock small pieces. So instead of paying for a 12-inch length of steel, you can now purchase a blank piece from us! These blanks are roughly shaped but are unfinished. Each piece includes a starter hole or slot. Prices start at $15.
Please check the Ordering page if you are interested in one of these or a similar piece.
